Freshman Drew Johnson scored 25 points to lead the University of Mary Washington to an 88-84 victory over Wesley College on Wednesday night in Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 9-3 on the season, and 3-2 in the Capital Athletic Conference.

Senior Eric Shaw got the Eagles on the board to start the night with a jump shot just 24 seconds into the game. Shaw knocked down two free throws to put UMW up 10-4 with 16:19 remaining in the game. Johnson upped the Eagles lead to 23-12 after he made two straight three-pointers with 13:39 left. 

Sophomore A.J. Robinson drained a three-pointer with 10:59 remaining to give UMW a 32-22 lead. Over the next 4:19 the Wolverines of Wesley College went on a 14-3 run to take their first lead of the game at 36-35. Freshman Jordan Shaw connected on a three-pointer with 3:15 remaining to take the lead back for the Eagles, 46-42. 

Austin Hall scored a layup on a steal with 2:30 left to put UMW up 50-45. To end the half, Wesley converted several free throws to get back into the game. The Eagles went into halftime with a lead of 54-53. The first half saw a total of 28 fouls. Johnson led the Eagles in the first half with 17 points. 

The second half was very back and forth. Wesley went on an 8-2 run to start the second half and take a 60-56 lead just 4:10 in. Khiorie Stewart made two free throws to tie the game up at 60-60 with 14:20 remaining. Again, Wesley built a lead and went up 69-65 on a layup with 10:18 left in the second half.  

Johnson made two three-pointers in a row with 8:55 left to give UMW a 73-69 lead. Robinson made a layup with 6:01 remaining to up the Eagles lead to 78-73. Wesley made two free throws with 3:00 left to put them down two, 82-80. Mark Madison made a layup and a free throw to put the game away for UMW, as they took the win 88-84.

Shaw finished with 13 and Stewart added 12 points for the Eagles. Cronin scored eight points but brought in 10 rebounds. Brian Cameron scored 32 points to lead the way for the Wolverines.

The Eagles shot 40.8% (29-71) from the field, making 14-41 three-pointers, and 16-25 free throws. The Wolverines shot 49.1% (28-57) from the field, making 3-11 three-pointers, and 25-33 free throws.

UMW will be back in action Saturday as they travel to Penn St.-Harrisburg for a 3:00 p.m. tipoff.
