Madison, Johnson Pace UMW Men’s Basketball Past Southern Virginia, 82-70, on Wednesday Evening

Sophomore Mark Madison scored 17 points to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 82-70 victory over Southern Virginia University on Wednesday evening in Buena Vista, VA. Freshman Drew Johnson added 14 points and seven rebounds for UMW. The Eagles improve to 6-2 overall, and 2-1 in CAC play.

In the early going, the Knights of Southern Virginia got off to a hot start and went up 11-2 in the first 4:23. Jacob Williams made a jump shot with 12:15 remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 14-12. The Eagles took their first lead of the game, 17-16, with 10:20 left on a Madison three pointer.

Khiorie Stewart knocked down a jump shot to give the Eagles a 22-18 lead with 8:33 left to play in the first half. Over the next 4:34, UMW went on an 11-4 run to increase the lead at 31-20 on two free throws from freshman Mike Janowski

With 1:51 remaining, the Eagles took their largest lead of the first half on a Williams layup to go up 40-26. The Knights closed the half on an 8-2 run, and UMW went into halftime with a lead of  42-34. 

In the second half, A.J. Robinson made a three pointer to up the Eagles lead to 51-36 with 16:57 left. Over the next 7:48 the Knights and Eagles traded off baskets. Southern Virginia never let the lead surpass 14, and UMW never let the lead become lower than 11. 

Johnson broke that trend as he drained a three pointer that increased the lead to 17, 73-56, with 8:05 remaining in the second half. The Eagles grabbed their largest lead of the night, 77-57, on two free throws from Johnny Cronin with 5:43 left in the second half. UMW would then close out the game from there and take the win 82-70.

Robinson and Williams scored 10 points a piece. Cronin supplied eight points and 11 rebounds. The Knights were led by Cale Thornton who scored 16 points. 

The Eagles shot 40.8% (29-71) from the field, making 8-22 three pointers, and 16-21 free throws. The Knights shot 53.1% (26-49) from the field, making 5-12 three pointers, and 13-19 free throws. UMW dominated the boards as they out rebounded SVU 35-28. The Eagles recorded 11 steals for the game and turned the Knights over 18 times. 

UMW will be back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. as they host Salisbury University in a CAC matchup. The game will be Fredericksburg City Schools Night, which means free admission for all FCPS employees and students.
