UMW Falls to York College, 64-61, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team was defeated, 64-61, to York College on Saturday afternoon in York, PA. The Eagles were led by Eric Shaw who scored 13 points. UMW falls to 5-2, and 1-1 in the CAC.

In the early going, the Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 lead on two three pointers from Shaw and a jumper by Jacob Williams. Williams added a steal and a layup to put the Eagles up 12-4 with 15:12 remaining and forced York to call a timeout. 

Sophomore Austin Hall nailed a three pointer to push the Eagles lead to 11, 17-6, with 13:35 remaining in the first half. With 12:28 remaining in the first half, the Spartans went on an 20-4 run to take the lead 30-23 with 7:22 left. Freshman Drew Johnson put an end to that run on a made layup with 6:05 left.

Khiorie Stewart finished a layup with 2:24 left in the first half to tie the game at 32-32. Stewart drained a three pointer with 45 seconds left to put the Eagles up 35-32 going into halftime. Shaw led the Eagles with 10 points and junior Johnny Cronin hauled in 12 rebounds in the first half.

In the second half, UMW scored the first six points on two layups by Cronin and another layup from Williams to give them the lead 41-32 just 1:08 into the second half. The Spartans cut it to four, but Stewart went on a 5-0 run by himself to push the lead to 46-37 with with 15:21 left in the second half.

Mark Madison gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the night with a three pointer to make it 49-39 with 14:21 left. Over the next 7:05, the Spartans went on a 15-3 run to take the lead 54-52 with 7:16 remaining. Sophomore A.J. Robinson put an end to that run and drained a three pointer to give the Eagles a 55-54 lead with 6:58 left in the second half.

Over the next 2:44, York went on a 7-1 run to take the lead 61-56 with 4:08 left in the game. Eric Shaw knocked down two clutch free throws with 1:06 left to put the Eagles down 62-61. UMW was down 64-61 with nine seconds left and Johnson got a look from three point range but came up just short. 

Cronin set a career high for rebounds with 14 for the game. Stewart added 12 points for the Eagles. Blayde Reich led the Spartans with 16 points.

The Eagles shot 37.5% (24-64) from the field, making 9-31 three pointers, and 4-6 free throws. The Spartans shot 39.3% (22-56) from the field, making 7-23 three pointers, and 13-23 free throws. The Spartans won the rebounding battle 42-37. UMW dished out 13 assists and finished with 10 steals.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Southern Virginia at 7:30 p.m. in another CAC showdown.
