Shaw’s 27 points leads Mary Washington past Baruch College, 69-54, on Saturday Afternoon in the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Tournament

Senior Eric Shaw poured in 27 points to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team past Baruch College, 69-54, on Saturday afternoon in the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Tournament. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season.

In the early going, the Eagles jumped out to a 10-4 lead with six points coming from Shaw and four points from junior forward Johnny Cronin. The Bearcats of Baruch College went on a 9-2 to take the lead 13-12 with 10:29 left in the first half. 

Right after Baruch took the lead, the Eagles reeled off seven straight points to regain the lead 19-13 with 9:14 left. A Tyler Withers three pointer gave UMW the lead 33-30 with 3:02 left. Mary Washington would take that 33-30 lead into the half. 

Shaw led the Eagles with 14 points in the first half. Cronin chipped in eight points on 4-4 shooting and Withers contributed six points. 

In the second half, Shaw scored five points in a row to put the Eagles up 38-32 3:00 into the second half. Two three pointers from A.J. Robinson and a three point play from Jacob Williams gave the Eagles a 47-32 lead with 14:55 left. 

Baruch used an 11-2 run in a span of 3:32 to cut the lead to 49-43. Over the next 4:16, UMW went on a 10-4 run. During that run, sophomore Mark Madison scored seven points and Shaw added a three pointer to put UMW up 59-47 with 6:51 left. 

A Shaw three pointer gave UMW their largest lead of the night, 67-51, with 2:37 left. Freshman Jordan Shaw capped the scoring for the Eagles with two free throws to defeat Baruch College, 69-54. 

Cronin chipped in 11 points and Madison finished with nine points. Williams hauled in eight rebounds and dished out five assists. Baruch was led by Chimaechi Ekekeugbor who scored 28 points.

The Eagles shot 41.0% (25-61) from the field, making 9-30 three pointers, and 10-12 free throws. Baruch shot 39.2% (20-51) from the field, making 4-18 three pointers, and 10-12 free throws. UMW outrebounded Baruch 35-34 and dished out 13 assists. 

UMW will face the winner of Carnegie Mellon/Chatham on Sunday in the championship of the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Tournament at 3 p.m.
