The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated Denison University, 70-57, on Sunday afternoon in the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament at Ron Rosner Arena. Senior forward Eric Shaw became the 20th player in UMW history to score 1,000 points, and was named tournament Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by junior guard Jacob Williams. UMW improves to 3-0 on the season. 

In the early going, Denison started out with five straight points to go up 5-0. The Eagles took their first lead of the game, 14-13, at the 12:57 mark on a jumper from sophomore Mark Madison. The Big Red of Denison went on an 11-2 run over the next 3:16 to regain the lead at 24-16. 

UMW tied the game up at 29-29 with 4:31 left in the 1st half on a layup from Williams. The two teams traded buckets but a Michael Janowski jumper put the Eagles up 37-34 with 1:13 left. Denison hit two free throws to cut the halftime lead at 1. UMW went into the locker room up 37-36. Williams led the Eagles with nine points in the first half.

In the second half, the Eagles went on a 13-3 run over the first 5:18 to take control of the game 50-39 on a Williams layup. Shaw connected on a three pointer with 11:06 left to earn his 1,000th point of his career and put UMW ahead 58-45. A Shaw jump shot at 6:28 gave UMW their largest lead of the night, 65-47. The Eagles closed out the game and earned their third win of the season, 70-57.

UMW was led by Shaw's 13 points. Drew Johnson, A.J. Robinson, Madison and Williams all chipped in 11 points a piece. Williams added eight rebounds and seven assists, and Shaw pulled down eight rebounds. Denison was led by Garrett Collier and Maxwell Siwik with 10 points. 

The Eagles shot 42.6% ( 29-68) from the field, making 9-23 three pointers and 3-5 free throws. The Big Red shot 42.6% (23-54) from the field, making 7-22 three pointers and 4-5 free throws.

Mary Washington will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. where they will play Baruch College at 1:00 p.m. as part of the Carnegie Mellon Tournament.
