Shaw, Lutkenhaus Fuel UMW Men's Basketball Past Wesley, 98-79

Eric Shaw scored 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 98-79 victory over Wesley College on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles end the season 12-13 overall and 7-11 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

In the first, Brent Mahoney scored the first five points of the game, while Shaw followed with a jumper to give the Eagles an early 7-0 lead.

After Wesley went on an 11-10 run to cut the lead to 17-11, John Lutkenhaus drilled three straight triples to give the Eagles a 26-11 lead with 10:20 left in the half. Wesley answered with their own 17-5 run, cutting the deficit to 33-28 with 4:58 left in the first.

The Eagles answered again with three straight triples, this time two from A.J. Robinson and one from Shaw, to go up 42-30 with just under four minutes remaining in the half.

Wesley ended the half by knocking down a jumper and going 7-7 from the charity stripe en route to a 9-4 run that cut the Eagles' lead to 46-39 heading into the break.

Lutkenhaus put back his own miss, and Shaw followed with an old-fashioned three to extend the lead to 51-39 in the opening minute of the second half.

The two teams exchanged baskets over the next few minutes, with the Eagles up 60-49, until Lutkenahus knocked down three free throws and hit a jumper to extend the lead back to 65-49.

Wesley answered again with a 22-7 run that cut the deficit to six, at 77-71, with 7:21 left in the game. The Eagles responded with a 13-0 streak that was fueled by eight from Shaw, three from Emerson Burk, and two from Lutkenhaus.

Wesley was able to cut the lead to 90-78, but Burke and Johnny Cronin hit back-to-back lay ups to put the game out of reach. After Wesley hit a free throw, Cronin knocked in one of his own before Lutkenhaus nailed another three-pointer to cap the scoring for the game at 98-79.

Shaw was 10-16 from the field and 7-8 from the line. Lutkenhaus hit five triples en route to 26 points, pulled in seven boards and had one steal to cap off his four-year career. Burke had 12 points, nine boards, two assists, and two blocks in his final game. Mahoney ended his career with an all-around effort of seven points, six boards, two assists, and two steals. Cronin added 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Robinson also hit double-figures, nailing three triples en route to 11 points. Jacob Williams also dished out a career-high seven assists in the win.

Mary Washington shot 49.3% from the field (35-71), making 10-30 three-pointers and 18-22 free throws. Welsey shot 33.8% from the field (25-74), making 6-23 three-pointers and 23-28 free throws.
