A season-high 14 points from Emerson Burk led the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 91-56 victory over Penn State-Harrisburg on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day in the Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 11-12 on the season and 6-10 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
In the first, the Eagles jumped to a quick 6-0 lead off lay ups from Burk, Jacob Williams, and Brent Mahoney. Harrisburg scored five straight to cut the lead to one, but the Eagles scored seven straight to take a 13-5 advantage with 14:45 left in the half.
Harrisburg responded again and went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 15-14, but the Eagles answered with an 8-2 run to go up 23-16 at the 7:07 mark. The run was fueled by four from Shaw, and two from both Mahoney and Johnny Cronin.
The Eagles continued to add to their lead, up 36-22 with 1:17 left in the half. Harrisburg knocked down a pair of throws before Cronin hit one to close the half out with the Eagles up 37-24.
In the second half, the Eagles wasted no time adding to their lead, pushing it all the way to 23 in the first six minutes at 54-31. The Eagles held Harrisburg scoreless for over five minutes, and pushed the lead to 29 off a three from Tyler Withers, a lay up from Cronin and a free throw from John Lutkenhaus.
With the Eagles up 60-31 with 10:55 left in the game, the two teams exchanged baskets until the 5:52 mark, with the Eagles holding a commanding 30-point advantage. With 2:36 left in the game, A.J. Robinson drilled a three to push the lead all the way to 35, up 86-51.
Jamal Newton gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game at 91-53 with 57 seconds left. Harrisburg knocked down a three with 42 seconds left to cap the scoring at 91-56.
In addition to Burk's 14, four other Eagles reached doubles-figures, which included all three seniors.
Mary Washington shot 49.2% from the field (30-61), making 10-24 three-pointers and 21-30 free throws. Harrisburg shot 33.3% from the field (20-60), making 5-20 three-pointers and 11-17 free throws. The Eagles held a 44-33 advantage on the boards.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday at 8:00 pm as they travel to Marymount.
