The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped an 86-85 decision to St. Mary's College on Wednesday evening in the Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles fall to 10-12 overall and 5-10 in Capital Athletic Conference play. The Eagles were led by A.J. Robinson's 23 points, which included a school record 7-7 from three-point range.  

St. Mary's jumped to an early 10-5 lead by the 15:18 mark. The Eagles continued to battle and cut the lead to 19-18 off a Robinson three-pointer with 10:14 left in the half.

St. Mary's responded and pushed the lead back to seven at 25-18, but the Eagles went on a 10-2 run to take the lead with 6:34 left. Brent Mahoney started the run with a free throw, while Robinson followed with three straight triples.

Four lead changes ensued after Robinson's hot shooting, but the Eagles found themselves on top at 40-38 with 2:03 left after Johnny Cronin hit a lay up. Cronin closed the half with three more tough baskets to give the Eagles a 46-43 lead at the break.

In the second, the Eagles built their lead to eight in the first four minutes, thanks to four points from Jacob Williams and two each from John Lutkenhaus and Eric Shaw. St. Mary's responded and cut the lead to two at the 15:27 mark, but Lutkenhaus hit a three on the next possession to put the Eagles up 57-52.

St. Mary's responded and took the lead back at 60-59 with 13:24 remaining. Mahoney tied the game at 62-62 on a lay in, but St. Mary's scored on the next possession to regain the lead. St. Mary's pushed the lead up to five with 8:07 left, but the Eagles rallied and took the lead back at 74-73 off another Cronin lay up with 6:29 left.

The next two minutes of play saw four lead changes until a St. Mary's lay up knotted the game up at 79-79.

Lutkenhaus and Williams both hit lay ups to take a four point lead, but St. Mary's hit two free throws to cut the deficit to two with 2:31 left. Shaw knocked down a jumper on the next possession, but St. Mary's answered with three straight to come within one at 85-84.

St. Mary's tipped in a missed lay up with four second left to go up one, and the Eagles were unable to convert a deep three-pointer at the buzzer.  

Cronin posted his second straight double-double, scoring 21 points off 10-18 shooting, while hauling in 11 boards. Lutkenhaus was 5-9 from the field en route to 15 points. Shaw dealt with foul trouble and scored 14 points in 15 minutes.

Mary Washington shot 50.0% from the field (34-68), making 10-21 three-pointers and 7-17 free throws. St. Mary's shot 56.5% from the field (35-62), making 5-12 three-pointers and 11-21 free throws.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday as they host Penn State-Harrisburg at 3:00 pm in the Ron Rosner Arena.
