25 points from junior forward Eric Shaw led the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 94-83 victory over York (Pa.) on Saturday evening in the Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 9-8 overall and 5-5 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
The Eagles got off to a quick start, as Shaw hit a lay up and John Lutkenhaus drilled a deep three-pointer in the first 50 seconds of play. York answered with a lay up and an old-fashioned three to tie the game at 5-5. The Eagles then went on a 14-4 run to take a 19-9 lead with 14:22 left in the half.
York responded to the Eagles, going on a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 23-21 with 10:25 left in the first. The two teams exchanged baskets for the next couple minutes until York took the lead with 4:21 at 35-34. The Eagles tied the game at 43-43 off a Shaw lay up, but York extended the lead back to four heading into the break.
In the second, York drilled a three-pointer in the opening minutes to lead 52-45, but the Eagles answered with an 11-0 run to take a 56-52 advantage at the 16:39 mark. The run was fueled by four from Shaw, three from Lutkenhaus, two from Jacob Williams, and two from Jamal Newton.
The Eagles continued to add to their lead, as Johnny Cronin hit a lay up at the 10:38 mark to put the Eagles up 68-60. The last 10 minutes was a foul fest, with both teams combining to take 33 free throws. In those 10 minutes, Mary Washington led by as many as 10, as they knocked down their free throws to secure the victory at 94-83.
Shaw was 8-12 from the floor, a perfect 2-2 from three, and 7-8 from the charity-stripe. Lutkenhaus was 6-10, making 4-8 three pointers and 2-3 free throws en route to 18 points. Cronin added nine points and seven boards. A.J. Robinson scored 15 off the bench, knocking down three triples.
Mary Washington shot 56.0% from the floor (28-50), making 12-25 three-pointers and 26-40 free throws. York shot 46.3% from the floor (24-55), making 7-25 three-pointers and 28-35 free throws. The Eagles held a 33-32 advantage on the boards.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday as they host Southern Virginia at 8:00 pm in the Ron Rosner Arena.
