Shaw Scores Career High 33 as Men's Basketball Falls at Va. Wesleyan, 100-85

Junior forward Eric Shaw scored a career-high 33 points, including 26 after halftime, but the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 100-85 decision at Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday night in Virginia Beach. The Eagles slip to 5-5 on the season.

The Eagles hung close in the early going, as neither team held more than a one possession advantage for the first 8:16. Va. Wesleyan went on a 7-1 run to take a 22-13 advantage with 9:58 left, but the Eagles rallied with five straight, including a Jacob Williams three pointer, to cut the deficit to 22-18 with 9:20 remaining.

Khory Moore then took over for the Marlins, scoring their next 17 straight points, and building the hosts' advantage to 39-23 with 6:24 on the clock. VWC extended the lead to 22 by halftime, 59-37.

Shaw was the story of the second half, making 8-15 shots, including a pair of three pointers, and also went 8-9 from the free throw line in the second 20 minutes. His efforts and those of fellow double digit scorers Austin Hall, John Lutkenhaus, and Williams kept the Eagles in the contest, drawing to within as few as 15 on the final scoreboard.

Shaw had 33 points to go with eight rebounds, while Hall scored 13, and Lutkenhaus and Williams scoring 10 apiece.

UMW shot 40.8% from the floor (29-71), making 10-22 three pointers and 17-26 free throws, while VWC shot 48.7% (37-76), going 14-35 on three point attempts and 12-15 from the free throw line. The Marlins led in rebounds, 47-35.

UMW will return to action on January 2 when the Eagles host Emmanuel (Mass.) College at Ron Rosner Arena at 7:00 p.m.
