UMW Men's Basketball Tops Marymount, 64-52, in Saturday CAC Clash

Eric Shaw scored 19 points to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 64-52 win over Marymount University on Saturday afternoon in the Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles jumped ahead early, 10-7, in the first 5:20 of action. Marymount responded with six straight points to take a 13-10 lead. Both teams exchanged buckets until Johnny Cronin hit two free throws to give the Eagles the lead back at 21-19. After Marymount cut the deficit to 31-30 with 1:11 remaining in the half, Brent Mahoney and Shaw each hit baskets to extend the lead to five going into the break.

In the second, the Eagles quickly pushed the lead to six, but the Saints scored three straight baskets to tie the score at 41-41 with 15:32 left. The Eagles went on a 10-2 to run to put a hold on the lead with 13:14 remaining. John Lutkenhaus hit back-to-back threes and Shaw hit two baskets to fuel the run.

Both teams went cold, as the game saw no scoring for 5:27. Emerson Burk made a layup to break the drought and put the Eagles up 53-43. Austin Hall and Lutkenhaus each followed with baskets to give the Eagles their largest lead of the game, 57-43. The Eagles used stops on the defensive end and free throws in the waning minutes to secure the victory at 64-52.

Shaw went 2-4 from three and 5-6 from the line, while Hall went 5-8 from the field, including 3-6 from three en route to 16 points. Cronin led the Eagles on the glass, pulling in seven boards.

The Eagles shot 50% from the field (22-44), making 8-15 three pointers and 12-21 free throws. Marymount shot 35.2% from the field (19-54), making 4-16 three pointers and 10-14 free throws.

The Eagles will return to action next Sunday, as they visit Randolph-Macon College at 2:00 pm.
