Shaw's 26 Points Lead UMW Men's Basketball to Win at Penn State Harrisburg; Third Seed in CAC Tournament

Sophomore forward Eric Shaw scored 26 points and junior forward John Lutkenhaus scored 18 points and hauled in a career-high 16 boards to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 77-63 win at Penn State-Harrisburg on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 14-11 overall and 10-8 in conference play.  With the win, UMW secures the third seed in next week's Capital Athletic Conference Tournament.

In the first half, Shaw scored the first 10 points for the Eagles to help take a 10-2 lead at the 15:03 mark.  Two three-point baskets from Lutkenhaus and one from Matt Forrest pushed the Eagles lead to 19-6 with just under 13 minutes remaining in the half. The Eagles extended their lead to 18, at 28-10, on a Haden Thompson layup at the 7:14 mark. The Eagles captured a 22 point lead, at 44-22, with six seconds left in the half on a layup from Lutkenhaus.

The Eagles started the second half with an old-fashioned three from Lutkenhaus to increase their lead to 47-22. The two teams exchanged buckets over the next several minutes, before the Lions began to chip away at the Eagles' lead. The Lions were able to cut the lead to seven, at 68-61, with under two minutes remaining, but solid free throw shooting down the stretch secured the 77-63 win for UMW.

Shaw scored 26 points on 8-11 shooting, making 10-14 free throws. Lutkenhaus scored 18 points on 5-11 shooting, making 5-9 free throws, and pulling down 16 boards. Thompson added 10 points off the bench.

Mary Washington shot 40.0% from the field (22-55), making 7-26 three pointers and 26-38 free throws. Penn State-Harrisburg shot 32.9% from the field (24-73), making 6-22 three pointers and 9-17 free throws. The Eagles held the advantage on the boards, 47-42.

The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday at 8:00 pm for the first round of the CAC Tournament, as they host sixth seeded Wesley College in the Ron Rosner Arena.
