UMW Men's Basketball Tops Marymount, 61-58; Kahn Wins 250th Game

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team picked up a big win against Marymount University, 61-58, to remain tied in third place in the CAC standings, as head coach Marcus Kahn won his 250th career game. The Eagles bounced back after dropping two straight, to improve to 8-8 in league play and 12-11 overall.  Haden Thompson scored 13 points off the bench to lead the Eagles. Eric Shaw and TJ Jones each added 12.

John Lutkenhaus drilled a three pointer in the opening seconds to give the Eagles an early 3-0 lead. After exchanging buckets for the next several minutes, Marymount jumped to a 15-7 lead with 13:51 remaining in the first. The Saints held onto their lead until the Eagles tied the score at
31-31 on a Mark Madison layup with less than three minutes remaining. UMW took the lead back 2:06 on an Emerson Burk layup to take a 33-31 advantage. Marymount responded with an old fashioned three, as well as a three pointer to push the lead to six. Thompson responded with 46 seconds left with a three of his own to narrow the deficit at 37-36 going into the half.

Both teams started off slow in the second half, scoring a combined 16 points in the first ten minutes to bring the score to a tie at 44-44. A jumper from Shaw and layup from Thompson gave the Eagles a four point lead. Marymount answered, and held a 54-50 lead with five minutes remaining. The Eagles finished strong and closed out the game on an 11-4 run, including an emphatic dunk from Shaw with 1:34 remaining.

Thompson scored 13 points on 5-7 shooting, including three triples. Shaw scored 12 points and hauled in seven boards. Jones added 12 points, five boards, and six assists.

Mary Washington shot 34.9% from the field (22-63), making 7-28 three pointers and 10-14 free throws. Marymount shot 40.0% from the field (20-50), making 5-19 three pointers, and 13-17 free throws. The Saints edged the Eagles in rebounding, 38-36, while the Saints committed 12 turnovers to UMW's six.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday evening in the Ron Rosner Arena at 8:00 pm for Senior Night as they take on Southern Virginia University in another CAC contest.
