Freshman guard Mark Madison scored a team-high 21 points to lead four starters in double figures, as the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated Wesley College, 75-57, on Saturday afternoon at the Ron Rosner Arena. UMW evens its record at 9-9, and improves to 5-6 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Eagles raced to a 42-26 halftime advantage, led by Madison, who scored all 21 of his points in the frame. After John Lutkenhaus opened the Eagles' effort with a three pointer, Madison hit the first of his five triples, and the Eagles wouldn't trail again in the contest.

With UMW leading, 8-7, the Eagles used a 15-2 run to blow the game open. Madison hit a three pointer to open the run, and followed with a pair of free throws. After the Wolverines cut the score to 13-9, junior TJ Jones and Lutkenhaus hit back to back three pointers, and Jacob Williams and Jones followed with two point baskets, as UMW led, 23-9, with 10:33 left in the half.

Madison made eight straight Eagle points, and the score stood at 36-19 with 5:30 remaining. He then ended the half with a three pointer and jumper to give UMW a 42-26 halftime lead.

In the second half, UMW pushed the lead to 20 before Matt Forrest and Jones hit back to back three pointers to push the lead to 64-38 with 9:16 to play. Wesley cut the deficit to 16, but a pair of Eric Shaw free throws closed the scoring as the Eagles gained the 18-point win.

Madison shot 6-12 from the floor, with 5-8 three pointers, and 4-5 free throws. Shaw scored 17 points on 5-10 shooting, Lutkenhaus recorded a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Jones scored 10.

The Eagles shot 40% for the game (24-60), making 12-27 three pointers, and 15-20 free throws. Wesley shot 29.9% (20-67), making 6-25 three point attempts and 11-17 free throws. The Eagles dominated the boards, 54-34.

Mary Washington will host York College on Monday night at 8 pm in a makeup from last Saturday's postponed contest, as part of a doubleheader with the Eagle women.
