Lutkenhaus' Double-Double Leads UMW Men to 70-60 Win Over St. Mary's in CAC Opener

Junior forward John Lutkenhaus scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 70-60 victory over conference rival St. Mary's College on Wednesday evening in both teams' CAC opener. Junior guard T.J. Jones added 18 points for the Eagles.

In the early going, UMW took advantage of four turnovers from St. Mary's in the first four minutes of action to take a 9-5 lead. The Seahawks responded with two buckets from Delaszo Smith and one from Marsalis Hurley to take an 11-9 lead.

St. Mary's continued to attack UMW's full court pressure to take their largest lead of the night, 28-20. The Eagles responded with a run of their own, narrowing the gap to 32-31 at the half. In the run, Jones scored three, while L.J. Baylor and Johnny Cronin each scored four for the Eagles.

Freshman Mark Madison nailed a jumper early in the second half to give the Eagles a 33-32 lead. The Seahawks responded seconds later with a layup from Hurley to take back the lead. Lutkenhaus gave the Eagles the lead again with a strong take to the hoop. Taking a 35-34 lead, the Eagles would never trail again.

At the 6:06 mark, a layup from freshman Jacob Williams gave the Eagles their largest lead of the night, 59-45. The Seahawks would cut the deficit to single digits in the waning minutes, but baskets from Madison, Lutkenhaus, and Jones would secure the victory.

UMW shot 48.1% from the floor (25-52), making 7-21 three point attempts and 13-24 free throws. St. Mary's shot 38.3% (23-60), making 1-9 three point attempts and 13-17 free throws. St. Mary's held a 44-28 advantage on the boards, but committed 26 turnovers to UMW's 17.
