Jones' 23 Leads Four Eagles in Double Figures as UMW Men Top Bryn Athyn, 95-64

Junior guard T.J. Jones scored a game-high 23 points to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 95-64 victory over Bryn Athyn in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Cabrini College on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 3-2 on the season.

The Eagles slwoly built its lead through the first half. Freshman Mark Madison scored the Eagles' first five points, and Jones followed with the next five as UMW built an early 10-5 lead. Jones, Madison, and freshman Johnny Cronin combined to score all of UMW's first 21 points, as the Eagles held a 21-14 lead with 9:13 left in the half.

After an Asa Scott lay in, Jones hit another three pointer, one of his five in the first half, to lift the UMW advantage to 26-14, and Madison hit another long-range shot to raise the advantage to 13 at 29-16 with 7:01 to go.

Scott hit a pair of consecutive three pointers to lift the lead to 40-21, and Jones capped the half with a three to give the Eagles a 50-25 halftime lead.

Cronin started the second half with a pair of three point plays, as UMW would open up a 56-26 cushion with 17:43 left in the second. The lead would stay near 30 for the rest of the way, as four Eagles reached double figures.

Jones ended with 23 points on 9-14 shooting, including 5-8 three pointers. Madison scored 15 points on 4-7 shooting, including 3-4 three pointers and 4-4 free throws. Cronin had a season-best 12 points on 5-5 shooting with a pair of free throws, and reserve LJ Baylor scored 12 points on 4-4 shooting, including a pair of three pointers, and two free throws.

The Eagles shot 52.3% (34-65), including 13-27 on three pointers and 14-17 on free throws. Bryn Athyn shot 45.7% (21-46), including 5-13 on three pointers and 17-27 on free throws. Bryn Athyn held a 35-34 rebounding edge, but the Eagles forced 22 turnovers in the win.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when they host St. Mary's College in the Capital Athletic Conference opener at 8:00 p.m.
