UMW's Johnson, Shaw Named to All-CAC Men's Basketball Team

YORK, Pa. - St. Mary's senior guard Nick LaGuerre, a three-time first team all-conference honoree who led the Seahawks to the regular-season championship, was selected as the 2015 CAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year in a vote of the conference coaches. LaGuerre, who led the Seahawks to the NCAA Division III Tournament Elite 8 during his sophomore season, joins Sheldon Taylor (2001) and Alex Franz (2011) as the only St. Mary's players to be named CAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year in the 25-year history of the conference. LaGuerre led SMC to a 66-17 overall record and a 37-9 CAC mark the past three seasons.

Salisbury, which finished second in the regular season behind St. Mary's, was rewarded by the CAC coaches by naming Josh Merkel the "Jeff Gamber CAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year" award winner, which is named in honor of former York College Athletic Director and Coach Jeff Gamber. Merkel is just the second SU coach to win the award, joining 1996 winner Ward Lambert in an exclusive club. The Sea Gulls also collected a pair of first-team All-CAC nods for junior forward Wyatt Smith and sophomore guard Justin Witmer. It's only the second time since SU joined the CAC in 1995 that the Sea Gulls placed two players on the All-CAC men's basketball first team. In 1996, Casey Musick and Randy Clark were first-team honorees on the CAC's post-season team. St. Mary's and Christopher Newport led the 2015 All-CAC Men's Basketball team, each with one first-team honoree and two second-team picks.

Joining LaGuerre on the 2015 all-star team from St. Mary's were second-team juniors Tanner Brooks and Troy Spurrier - both first time CAC all-stars. CNU senior guard Mike Cherry moved from the All-CAC second team in 2014 to a first-team position this season. Captains teammates Marcus Carter, a freshman guard who was picked by the coaches as the CAC Rookie of the Year, along with sophomore forward Tim Daly were selected as second-team all-stars. Carter is the first CNU player to win the Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year award, and Daly is a first-time all-star. Mary Washington senior guard Taylor Johnson joined CNU's Mike Cherry in moving from the second-team All-CAC squad in 2014 to the top team this season. Johnson's teammate, freshman forward Eric Shaw, was one of two freshmen named to the 2015 All-CAC second team. Marymount also placed two on the All-CAC squad, including first-team senior center JC Hoellich and second-team senior guard Jesse Konadu, who missed the last eight games of the season with an injury. Konadu was the 2012 CAC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year. Wesley was the sixth team represented on the 2015 All-CAC squad as junior forward

Wayne Lennon was chosen by the conference coaches as a second-team selection.
