Johnson's Double Double Leads UMW Men's Basketball Past Penn State Harrisburg, 73-65

Senior Taylor Johnson scored 25 points and added 12 rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 73-65 victory over Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action at the Anderson Center.

The Eagles used the strength of an early 8-0 run to take a 13-5 lead with 13:26 remaining in the first half. Johnson scored five points in the run, with the first of his five three pointers on the night.

The Lions trimmed the lead to 13-11 with a 6-point spurt of their own, but Johnson hit another three to propel a run that gave UMW a 21-13 lead with 7:59 to go. The Lions scored five straight, but UMW scored 11 straight, with baskets from four players, to take a 32-18 lead with 2:54 left in the half. UMW led, 36-24, at halftime.

Harrisburg started the second half with a 12-2 run that cut the deficit to 38-36, but Asa Scott and John Lutkenhaus made back to back baskets, and back to back three pointers from Johnson gave UMW a 54-42 lead with 9:58 to play.

The Eagles upped the lead to 15 on an Emerson Burk basket with 4:52 to go, and the Lions were able to get no closer than seven points the rest of the way, as Shaw and Scott each made four free throws down the stretch.

Johnson was 7-13 from the field, including 5-8 on three pointers, and went 6-8 from the line, and added a game-high 12 rebounds and four steals. Shaw scored 16 points with four baskets from the floor and 8-11 on free throws. Scott scored 12 points and added six rebounds and three assists.

UMW shot 43.8% from the field (21-48), making 8-24 three point attempts, and went 23-29 from the free throw line. PSU-Harrisburg went 23-56 from the field (41.1%), making 8-23 three pointers, and went 11-17 from the line. UMW held a 35-34 edge in rebounding.

Mary Washington will host Southern Virginia University on Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. in the home finale.
