UMW Men Fall at Marymount, 65-50, in Saturday CAC Matinee

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 65-50 decision at Marymount University on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action in Arlington, Va. The Eagles fall to 5-14 overall and 5-7 in CAC play.

The Eagles looked strong early, surging to an 8-0 lead over the opening five minutes, but the Saints pulled to within two at 12-10 with 11:04 left on a three pointer by Danny Ferry. Another Ferry three and a layup after a turnover gave the Saints a 15-14 lead with 9:22 left in the half.

The lead would change hands five times in the next several minutes, with Asa Scott's three pointer giving UMW a 22-20 advantage with 2:57 left. After a pair of Isaac Blue free throws put UMW up four, the Saints scored the final four of the half to send the game to halftime tied at 24-24.

Marymount quickly claimed the lead in the second half, and pushed its advantage to six points, at 33-27, with 16:38 left, but the Eagles rallied with three baskets from Eric Shaw and a three pointer from Ty Thurston to take a 36-35 lead with 12:54 to go. A Brent Mahoney three pointer pushed the margin to five points at 44-39 with 9:38 left, but the Saints would use six straight made free throws in a run to tie the score at 47-47with 5:48 left.

After a big three pointer from Scott with 5:05 left, UMW had a 50-47 lead, but would not score again as the Saints closed the game with an 18-0 spurt to put the game away.

Shaw was the only Eagle in double figures with 20 points on 8-17 shooting. As a team, the Eagles shot 18-55 (32.7%), making 6-21 three pointers, and going 8-12 from the free throw line. Marymount shot 18-47 (38.3%), making 7-19 three pointers and 22-33 free throws. Ferry led all scorers with 24 off the bench for the Saints.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host St. Mary's College in CAC action starting at 8:00 p.m.
