Lutkenhaus' Career-High 29 Leads UMW Past Frostburg, 73-71, in CAC Thriller

Sophomore John Lutkenhaus scored a career high 29 points to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 73-71 win at Frostburg State University on Wednesday night. The Eagles improve to 5-13 overall and 5-6 in CAC play.

The Eagles jumped ahead with a pair of three pointers from Matt Forrest and another from Taylor Johnson to hold a 9-2 lead with 16:24 remaining in the first half. The Bobcats cut the deficit to 9-6, but another Forrest three pushed the Eagle lead to 12-6 with 14:08 to go in the half.

Lutkenhaus hit the first of his five three pointers to push the lead to 15-8, but the Bobcats cut the deficit to 18-14 with 7:58 left. The Eagles cut the margin to three, but a late basket and pair of free throws from Emerson Burk gave the Eagles a 32-24 lead at halftime.

The Bobcats cut the deficit to one at 32-31 to open the second half, and took the lead on a Nick Smoot three pointer with 15:11 to play. The lead stayed with FSU between one and three points for the next four minutes before a Bobcat three pushed their lead to six at 52-46 with 11:09 left.

Using a Lutkenhaus three and another from Taylor Johnson, UMW tied the score at 61 with 7:08 to play. Lutkenhaus gave the Eagles a 66-63 lead with 4:51 to go, and another with 2:218 left gave the Eagles a 71-67 edge with 2:29 on the clock.

UMW led, 73-70, but Frostburg was fouled on a three pointer with 2.4 seconds left. After making the first free throw, FSU missed the second, and missed intentionally on the third. The ball deflected out of bounds off the Eagles, giving FSU a shot to tie or win, but the shot rimmed off, giving the Eagles the win.

Lutkenhaus shot 12-17 from the field, making 5-8 three pointers. Johnson scored 13 points and added 11 rebounds, and Forrest scored 11 for UMW.

The Eagles shot 29-59 from the field (49.2%), making 10-22 three pointers, and went 5-9 from the line. Frostburg shot 29-63 (46.0%), making 7-22 three pointers, and was 6-8 from the line. The Eagles led in rebounds, 36-31.

Mary Washington will visit Marymount on Saturday in another CAC clash starting at 4:00 p.m.
