Johnson Scores 1,000th Point; Leads UMW Men to 76-65 Win Over York

Senior guard Taylor Johnson scored his 1,000th career point en route to a game-high 25 points as the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated York College, 76-65, on Saturday at the Anderson Center. He becomes the 18th player in school history to surpass the milestone.

York gained the early lead, 6-2, though four minutes, but three pointers from Johnson and Asa Scott tied the score at 8-8 with 14:15 remaining in the half. The Eagles grabbed the lead on an Eric Shaw free throw, and the lead would then change hands three times in the next minute.

York grabbed the lead at 15-15, and upped the margin to as many as eight points, at 26-18 with 4:14 left. The Eagles used a pair of Matt Forrest three pointers to cut the deficit to two, at 26-24,  and a three pointer in the waning seconds by Johnson tied the score heading to halftime, 31-31.

The Eagles quickly seized command in the second half, using a 13-4 run, sparked by five points from Shaw and four from Johnson and Brent Mahoney. UMW pushed the lead to 16 on an Emerson Burk jumper with 10:57 left, and the Eagles were able to keep the deficit to at least 10 points the rest of the way.

Johnson shot 7-15 from the field with five three pointers, and went 5-6 from the free throw line. Shaw shot 5-7 from the field en route to 14 points, and Asa Scott added 10 points for UMW. Dalton Myers had 18 for York.

The Eagles shot 58.3% in the second half (14-24) en route to 24-53 shooting on the day (45.3%), including 12-35 three pointers, and went 16-24 from the free throw line. York shot 49.1% (27-55) including 4-18 three pointers, and went 7-12 from the charity stripe. York held a 33-29 rebounding advantage but committed 17 turnovers, to eight for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will visit Frostburg State University on Wednesday night in another key CAC contest starting at 8:00 p.m.
