UMW Men Fall in 2OT to Wesley, 90-89, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 90-89 decision to Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference play on Saturday at the Anderson Center. The Eagles drop to 1-5 in CAC play.

The lead changed hands six times in the early action, and the Eagles held a 14-12 lead with 15:21 remaining in the half. UMW used a 9-0 run to take a 25-15 lead with 11 minutes left, spurred by points from four different players, and pushed the lead to as many as 21 points twice, the last coming with 1:40 remaining. Brent Mahoney made a pair of three pointers in the stretch.

Wesley cut into the deficit, but a last-second layup from Isaac Blue gave the Eagles a 48-29 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles, who had shot 61% from the field in the first half, went cold, shooting 6-25 from the field in the second, as Wesley erased the lead with 1:32 remaining. A layup from Eric Shaw with 45 seconds left gave UMW the lead, but A.J. Tilghman made a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left to tie the score and send it to overtime.

In the first overtime, Wesley jumped out to a five-point lead at 73-68 in the first two minutes, but the Eagles scrapped back and took the lead on a Taylor Johnson three pointer with 1:04 remaining. Johnson made a pair of free throws late to give UMW a three-point cushion, but Wesley's Quincy Pettiford hit a baseline three pointer at the buzzer to send the game to a second extra stanza.

Wesley again took the early lead in the secvond overtime, jumping out to a five-point cushion in the opening three minutes, but the Eagles used five free throws and also a pair of steals from Ty Thurston to tie the score at 88, and a free throw from Shaw with 23 seconds left gave UMW an 89-88 lead. Wesley's Jordan Johnson hit a close jumper with 11 seconds left, which proved to be the game winner.

The Eagles shot 40.6% from the field (28-69), making 7-20 three pointers, and went 26-34 on free throws. Wesley shot 51.5% from the field (35-68), making 5-17 three pointers, and went 15-23 from the line.

Shaw led UMW with 27 points on 9-16 shooting, while Johnson scored 24 points, and Mahoney scored 17. Johnson had 11 rebounds, and Shaw 10 for double-doubles.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Southern Virginia University at 7:30 p.m.
