UMW Men's Basketball Falls at York, 63-52, in Saturday CAC Tilt

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 63-52 decision at York College of Pa. on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action. Senior Taylor Johnson scored 14 points and added eight rebounds and four assists in defeat.

It was the Eagles who jumped ahead early, as the Eagles took an early 11-2 lead, thanks to a pair of Johnson three pointers and another from Matt Forrest. UMW ran the lead to 11 at 21-10 on another Johnson three with 10:28 to go.The lead held near double figures, until York closed the half on a 14-5 run that closed the halftime deficit to one, at 31-30.

The Spartans opened the second half with a three pointer to take the lead, but the Eagles regained the favor with a three pointer from sophomore Brent Mahoney with 15:06 to play. York was able to build the lead to six at 45-39 over the next three minutes, but layups from Isaac Blue and Mahoney cut the deficit back to two.

The game stayed a one or two possession game, with a John Lutkenhaus layup with 2:59 to play cut the deficit to 53-52. Unoftunately, the Spartans would go on a game-ending 10-0 run, aided at the free throw line by the Eagles fouling intentionally, and claim the 11-point win.

Johnson scored 14 points and also had eight rebounds and four assists. Mahoney scored nine, and Eric Shaw eight for the Eagles. Lutkenhaus had nine rebounds as well. Brad Wesner scored 15 for York.

The Eagles shot 32.7% (18-55), making 6-20 three pointers, and went 10-15 at the free throw line. York shot 46.2% (24-52), making 6-15 three pointers, and went 7-11 from the free throw line. York held a 35-34 edge in rebounding, as the Eagles created 11 steals but had 15 turnovers.

Mary Washington will return to action next Saturday when they visit St. Mary's College in another CAC game at 3:00 p.m.
