University of Mary Washington senior Bradley Riester was named to the first team of the all-state college division men's basketball team, as announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association on Wednesday. UMW head coach Rod Wood was named the state Coach of the Year in the college division.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan College senior D.J. Woodmore was named the 2014 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division Men’s Basketball Player of the Year announced Wednesday by the organization. Woodmore’s teammate, Khory Moore, picked up Rookie of the Year honors and Rod Wood from the University of Mary Washington was named the State Coach of the Year.
Woodmore was named a first team All-American by the NABC, and a second team pick according to D3hoops.com. The 2014 South Region Player of the Year and Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year scored 622 points this season, the second-best mark in VWC history. He closes out his career ranked second in program history with 1,955 career points, and helped power the Marlins into the NCAA Tournament, earning MVP honors in the ODAC Tournament.
Moore was selected as the 2014 ODAC Rookie of the Year and was the Marlins’ second-leading scorer with 11.7 points per game. He made 62 three-pointers on the season and earned All-Tournament team honors in the ODAC Championship. He scored a career-high 30 points in the NCAA Tournament game loss to Mary Washington, becoming only the third Marlin rookie to score 30 in a game. He and Woodmore helped guide VWC to a 24-7 overall record, finishing 19th in the national rankings.
Mary Washington head coach Rod Wood pieced together a magical run in his final year at the helm for the Eagles. UMW finished the year ranked No. 8 in the D3hoops.com national poll, the highest in program history, after posting a 25-6 overall record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. He was named a finalist for the Glenn Robinson National Coach of the Year award. This year’s UMW team finished with a program-record for wins in a season, and advanced to the National Quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament after claiming the Capital Athletic Conference tournament championship.
In an extraordinary display of the depth of basketball talent in the state, ten different programs across the Commonwealth of Virginia were represented on the first and second All-State teams. Woodmore was joined on the first team by Joshua Hart (Virginia Intermont), Bradley Riester (Mary Washington), David Falk (Eastern Mennonite) and Jamal Pullen (Ferrum).
The second team All-State consisted of Tra Benefield (Christopher Newport), Daniel Eacho (Roanoke), Avery Green (Shenandoah), Andre Simon (Randolph-Macon) and Khobi Williamson (Hampden-Sydney).
The Virginia Sports Information Directors name 29 all-state teams in 16 sports each year, as well as an academic all-state squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
