#13 UMW Men Fall at Christopher Newport, 74-61

The 13th ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 74-61 decision at Christopher Newport University on Wednesday night, falling to 18-4 on the season, and 11-3 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles fell behind early, and could never get back even on the night. In a low scoring first half, the Eagles kept the score tied in the opening five minutes, but CNU used a 9-2 run to jump ahead, 14-7, with 11:02 remaining.

The Captains were able to build the lead to nine before a Bradley Riester hit a three pointer with 8:18 remaining to cut the deficit to three at 18-15. CNU was able to slowly build the lead to double figures, and held a 38-27 advantage at intermission.

After CNU hit a three to open the half, the Eagles began to chip away into the deficit. UMW Saw senior Dajon Daniel hit a pair of layups to cap a run to cut to within 45-41 with 12:11 to play. But each time the Eagles would get to within one or two possessions, the Captains found the answer, keeping UMW at bay the rest of the way for the 13-point win.

CNU shot a blistering 50% from the field (26-52), including 8-21 three pointers, while UMW shot just 34.5% (19-55), and made just 4-20 threes. UMW did shoot a sterling 19-23 from the free throw line in the contest. The Capitains led in rebounding, 36-33, and both teams committed 16 turnovers.

Daniel led the Eagles with 20 points, while Riester scored 14 and Dom Morra added 10. Taylor Johnson had nine points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles.

The Eagles will look to get back on top in the Capital Athletic Conference standings on Saturday when they host Wesley College, ranked sixth in the nation, at 1:00 p.m. at the Anderson Center.
