Riester, Johnson Lead UMW Men's Basketball Past York, 58-44

Junior guard Bradley Riester scored a game-high 18 points, and sophomore Taylor Johnson added 15 points on 6-6 shooting to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 58-44 win over York College on Wednesday night at the Anderson Center. The Eagles improve to 13-11 on the season, and 6-5 in CAC action. The Eagles have held five of their last seven opponents to 60 points or less.

The Eagles built a eight-point lead at 13-5 with 13:53 remaining, as Riester hit a pair of three pointers as five players scored in the run. The Spartans would cut the deficit to four at 14-10 with 10:22 remaining, but seven straight points from UMW built the lead to 11 at 21-10 with 7:14 left. A three pointer from senior Antonio Ortega with 1:44 on the clock gave UMW a 28-13 halftime lead.

UMW led by 16 with 17:32 left in the game, but York was able to close the gap to nine at 38-29 with 11:55 to go. A Johnson three with 6:46 put the Eagles ahead, 51-34, and the Eagles held on for a 58-44 win.

The Eagles shot 40.8% from the floor (20-49) with eight three pointers, while York shot 34.1% (15-44) with two treys. Both teams committed 20 turnovers, and the Eagles held a 36-32 edge in rebounding.

Riester was 6-17 from the floor with four three pointers, while Johnson made all six of his field goal attempts with three three pointers and added a game-high nine rebounds.

The Eagles will close the regular season at St. Mary's College at 4:00 p.m.
