UMW Men Escape Marymount in 2OT, 78-75

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team escaped with a 78-75 double overtime win over Marymount University on Wednesday night at the Anderson Center in Capital Athletic Conference play, keeping UMW in first place in the league standings at 9-1 as the Eagles move to 14-5 overall.

The Eagles broke out to a big first half lead, leading by as many as 17 points at 25-8 with 9:03 left in the first half, but the Saints trimmed the lead to one by halftime at 33-32. The lead traded hands five times in the second half with the Saints opening up a four point lead at 58-54 with 4:14 to play. Freshman Sean Armstrong (Richmond, Va., Monacan) made a three point play and a Walt Smith (Alexandria, Va., T.C. Williams) free throw tied the score at 58 with 3:34 to play.

After a marymount jumper, Bradley Riester (Richmond, Va., Monacan) hit a three pointer to put UMW up 61-60, and the Eagles led 63-60 after a Tad Dickman (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) layup. Marymount's Antonio Rouse tied the score at 63 with 1:29 to play, and neither team would score again, sending the game to overtime.

In the first overtime, the Saints held a 66-64 lead until Riester hit another three to put UMW up, 67-66, with three minutes left. Rouse hit a jumper with 2:27 to give the Saints the lead with 2:27 left, and Ryan Farrar (Ashburn, Va., Centreville, Va.) hit a free throw with 1:36 to play to tie the score, sending the game to a second extra frame.

In the second OT, Riester hit a technical free throw to give UMW the lead, and Smith followed with a jumper to up the lead to three at 74-71 with 2:11 left. The Saints cut the deficit back to one with a pair of Reed Scott free throws, but the Eagles reclaimed a three-point cushion with a pair of free throws.

Marymount's Antonio Rouse was fouled on a three point attempt with 3.1 seconds left, and after hitting the first, missed the second. After a lane violation by UMW, Rouse made the third, cutting the UMW lead to one at 76-75. Freshman Taylor Johnson (Ashburn, Va., Broad Run) made a pair of free throws to cap the scoring.

Senior Henry Brisibe (South Riding, Va., Freedom) led the Eagles with 17 points, while Armstrong scored 13, Smith scored 12, and Tad Dickman 10 for UMW. Marymount was led by Jesse Konadu's 18 points.

The Eagles will host St. Mary's on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
