UMW Field Hockey Blanks W&L, 2-0, on Wednesday Evening to Improve to 5-2

Sophomore forward Grayson Scott scored one goal and assisted on another, as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team defeated Washington & Lee University, 2-0, on Wednesday evening at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 5-2 on the season.

In a contest that didn't see a card issued and played at a brisk pace, neither team started swiftly offensively, as each team managed just one shot in the first quarter. The Eagles found the cage 8:06 into the second quarter, as Scott ook a pass from senior Emma Bernard and flicked the ball inside the far post for her fifth goal of the season.

The score remained 1-0 through halftime, and the Eagle defense coninued to turn away the Generals before they could find serious opportunities. Then, with 6:06 left in the third, Scott fired a shot that the Generals keeper stopped, but the rebound came right to junior Paige Stewart, who was in perfect position to corral the ball and send into the empty goal.

The Eagles led in shots. 11-5, as well as penalty corners, 5-2. UMW goalkeeper Bailey McNabb gained the shutout win, making one save.

UMW will return to action on Saturday when the Eagles host #22 Shenandoah University a 1:00 p.m.
