UMW Field Hockey Falls to Catholic, 4-2, on Wednesday,

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to visiting Catholic University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 4-6 on the season.

Catholic opened the game with immediate results, jumping out to a 2-0 lead early, and held a 3-0 advantage at halftime.

The Eagles climbed back into contention in the third, as junior Emma Bernard scored on a penalty corner, with assists to Paige Stewart and Sydney Keating, at 32:10. The Eagles drew to within 3-2 in the 40th minute, as Stewart collected a rebound off a saved shot to score. But Catholic immediately answered to go ahead 4-2, and the score remained there until the final horn.

Mary Washington led in shots, 12-11, as well as penalty corners, 12-9. UMW freshman goalie Erin Roy made four saves, and Tally Vaughan added a defensive save for the Eagles.

UMW will return to action on Sunday when the Eagles host Centre College at 11:00 a.m.
