UMW Field Hockey Tops Dickinson, 3-1, in Regular Season Finale

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team jumped ahead with two first quarter scores, and held on for a 3-1 victory over visiting Dickinson College on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles close the regular season with a 9-6 record.

The Eagles didn't wait long to score, as sophomore Riley Tengwall (Grasonville, Md. / Kent Island) scored on a Sydney Keating (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) assist at 3:39 into the game. Keating directed the ball to the left to Tengwall, who rocketed a shot inside the far post and into the open cage. UMW increased its lead to 2-0 at 6:26 elapsed, as sophomore Emma Bernard (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) scored on assists from Keating and sophomore Mary Vaughan (Gloucester, Va./Glloucester) on a penalty corner.

Dickinson cut the deficit to 2-1 with six minutes elapsed in the third quarter, but UMW answered quickly, as just 1:01 later, Tengwall scored unassisted to cap the scoring.

The Eagles led in shots, 17-9, as well as penalty corners, 7-4. UMW senior goalie Chloe Billy (Henrico, Va./Godwin) made four saves, and junior Zoe Hammond (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) added a pair of rapid-fire defensive saves.

UMW will next play in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference semifinal, at either Christopher Newport or Salisbury, pending the result of those teams' contest on Wednesday evening.
