UMW Field Hockey Tops Virginia Wesleyan, 9-0, on Saturday

Sophomores Emma Bernard (Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor) and Riley Tengwall (Grasonville, Md. / Kent Island) each scored three goals to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 9-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 2-3 on the season.

The Eagles reached the scoreboard first with 11:01 left in the first quarter, as Bernard scored on an assist from junior Maggie Ellis (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal). Just 1:11 later, Tengwall scored unassisted to push the margin to 2-0, and freshman Jessica Wood (Fauquier, Va. / Kettle Run) added another in the final minute of the first quarter on an assist from Lauren Boucher (Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox).

Freshman Jessica Tyndall (Felton, Del. / Lake Forest) opened the second quarter scoring with 1:13 gone in the period, and freshman Paige Stewart (Richmond, Va. / Hermitage) scored 2:23 later to up the lead to 5-0. Bernard scored her second goal of the day with 10:01 left before halftime, where UMW held a 6-0 advantage.

Tengwall scored the lone goal of the third quarter, with 10:24 left in the period, and then scored another with 12:53 left in the fourth. Bernard added her third of the day with 11:05 remaining to cap the scoring.

The Eagles led in shots, 29-4, as well as penalty corners, 14-4. UMW goalkeeper Chloe Billy (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin) made three saves in gaining the shutout in the cage.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday when the Eagles host St. Mary's College at 4:30 p.m.
