Sophomore Riley Tengwall (Grasonville, Md. / Kent Island) and senior Sydney Keating (Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax) each scored first quarter goals, but second-ranked Franklin & Marshall College scored one goal each in the last three quarters to take a 3-2 victory over the University of Mary Washington field hockey team on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 1-2 on the season.
Tengwall opened the scoring for UMW with 4:58 remaining in the first quarter with an unassisted tally, and Keating gave the Eagles a two-goal cushion with 2:25 left in the first, also unassisted.
The Diplomats got on the scoreboard with 11:30 left in the second, but the Eagles defense stiffened and UMW held a 2-1 lead at halftime. In the third, F&M found the tying score, and went ahead with the eventual game winner with 10:08 left in regulation.
The Diplomats led in shots, 13-8, as well as penalty corners, 8-7. UMW junior goalkeeper Choe Billy (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin) made five saves on the day for the Eagles.
UMW will return to action on Wednesday when they host Shenandoah University at 4:30 p.m.
