UMW Field Hockey Tops Southern Va., 12-0, on Wednesday; Gains Five Seed in CAC Tourney

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team erupted for seven first quarter goals en route to a 12-0 victory at Southern Virginia University on Wednesday evening in Capital Athletic Conference action in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles improve to 7-10 overall, and 2-3 in league play.

Senior forward Lauren Hopkins opened the scoring just 1:06 into play, and junior Emma Claire Stewart added another at 4:17. Junior Morgan MacCartney added scores at 5:24 and 7:13, on assists from Stewart and senior Lexie Dixson, to up the margin to 4-0. Sophomore Sydney Keating caged a goal at 12:53, and junior Sammie Ferris added another exactly one minute later. Junior Izzy Scholz capped the first quarter scoring with seven seconds left, pushing the lead to 7-0.

Sophomore Jess Smith scored on a Hopkins assist at 22:33, giving the Eagles an 8-0 lead at halftime.

In the third, Hopkins scored her second of the game at 31:12 on a Meredith LeBel, and Dixson scored at 35:24 on a Hopkins assist. MacCartney scored her third of the night at 38:13 on a Dixson assist, and Ferris capped the scoring at 39:32 on a Hopkins pass.

The Eagles led in shots, 47-0, as well as in penalty corners, 8-0. UMW goalkeepers Jillian Lawrence and Chloe Billy each played for 30 minutes in goal for UMW in sharing the shutout. 

UMW will be back in action on Saturday when the Eagles visit York College of Pa. the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament at 2 p.m.
