Smith's Goal in Final Seconds, Lifts UMW Field Hockey Past St. Mary's

Sophomore Jess Smith scored the game winning goal to lead the Eagles past St. Mary's 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 6-10 overall and 1-3 in CAC play.

UMW started the first half on the offensive end firing 4 shots and gaining 4 penalty corners in the first period but was not able to find the back of the net. The Eagles fired another 3 shots and received 2 penalty corners in the second half but the Seahawks goalie was there to make the saves. The Eagles defense did not allow a single shot in the first period and only allowed 1 shot in the second period.

During the third period, the Eagles and Seahawks battled it out but remained tied until the 54th minute when the Seahawks got on the board. UMW responded 2 minutes later, when Junior Izzy Scholz scored to tie the game at 1-1.  During the final minutes of regular play, both teams fought back and forth for a go-ahead goal. That goal finally came in the final 15 second of regular play when Smith scored to give the Eagles the goal they needed to seal the win.

The Eagles outshot the Seahawks 20-5 and had 15 penalty corners. Goalie Jillian Lawrence recorded 4 saves for the Eagles, while Kelbey Egerland had 7 for St. Mary's.

UMW returns on Wednesday, when they visit Southern Virginia at 5:00pm.
