UMW Field Hockey Tops Roanoke, 4-3, on Monday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team topped Roanoke, 4-3, on Monday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 4-6 on the season. Senior Lauren Hopkins recorded two goals and one assist for UMW.

In the first quarter, the two teams played even as there was a 0-0 score at the end. UMW recorded two shots on goal, but both were turned away by the goalie. Roanoke had two shots, but neither on goal. 

The second quarter is when the scoring picked up. UMW got on the board in the 22nd minute as Hopkins finished off a pass from Emma Claire Stewart to take a 1-0 lead. Roanoke then went on the attack and earned themselves a penalty stroke in the 23rd minute. The Maroons converted the penalty stroke and tied the game 1-1. The game stay tied 1-1 until the end of the half.

In the third quarter, Roanoke took a 2-1 advantage just four minutes in. UMW played hard and tied the game at two a piece in the 39th minute. Hopkins added her second goal of the day as she tipped in a shot by Izzy Scholz. Just three minutes later, the Maroons added a third goal to take a 3-2 lead. Roanoke had a short lived lead after that as the Eagles scored just a minute later. UMW fired off three straight shots and after the second one was saved, freshman Lydia Bryant put one in the back of the net to tie it at 3-3. The Eagles fended off two corners at the end of the quarter to keep the game tied at three a piece.

After the two teams didn't record a shot in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, the Eagles went on the attack. They recorded a penalty corner in the 50th minute, and had four shots on goal but the Maroons wiped them away. UMW was then awarded another corner in the 51st minute. Hopkins played a ball into Jackie Smith and Smith put away what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. UMW held on to win after Roanoke had two penalty corners.

The Eagles outshot the Maroons 15-10 and had five penalty corners. Jillian Lawrence recorded three saves for the Eagles.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Randolph-Macon at 4 p.m.
