UMW Field Hockey Falls to York PA, 4-3, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision to York College of PA on Saturday at Homecoming. The Eagles slip to 9-5 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 9-6.

York opened the scoring in the contest, as Greta Plappert scored from the top of the circle on a penalty corner at 9:44. The Eagles responded at 12:07, as sophomore Izzy Scholz scored unassisted. At 22:56, junior Lauren Hopkins scored on an assist from classmate Lexie Dixson to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage. The score remained until halftime.

In the second half, York tied the score on a Plappert tally at 39:37, and then took the lead on Plappert's third score of the day at 56:49 on a penalty stroke. The Eagles knotted the score at 3-3 at 62:26 as senior Gillian Ross scored on a Hopkins assist off a corner. York found the game winner on a stroke from Dana Meehling at 64:48.

York led in shots, 28-11, as well as in penalty corners, 11-7. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt had 13 saves on the day for UMW, with senior Shelby Press adding a defensive save. York's Sam Keating had four saves.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit St. Mary's College of Md. at 4:00 p.m. in another CAC contest.
