Stewart's Two Late Goals Lifts UMW Field Hockey Past Frostburg St., 3-1

Freshman Emma Claire Stewart scored two goals in the last five minutes to propel the University of Mary Washington field hockey team past Frostburg State University, 3-1, on Tuesday in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 9-4 overall, and 1-2 in the CAC.

In the first minute of the game, Gillian Ross put the Eagles up 1-0 as she hit home a penalty corner from Lauren Hopkins. Frostburg State tried to answer the Eagles with three shots on goal but two were saved by Jessica Cavolt and Shelby Press had a defensive save. Cavolt made two back-to-back saves in the 16th minute to keep UMW up 1-0.

The Eagles had ample chances to score a second goal but the Bobcats goalie came up with some big saves. The defense of UMW did not allow a shot by Frostburg State over the last 17 minutes and the Eagles took a 1-0 lead into half.

Over the first seven minutes of the second half, the Eagles dominated as they had three shots and three penalty corners but could not put one in the back of the cage. In the 50th minute, the Bobcats tied the game, 1-1, as they scored on a breakaway.

The two teams both tried to find that elusive second goal over the next 15 minutes. Stewart found that goal in the 65th minute as she gathered a rebound and put it past the goalie. Just three minutes later, Stewart added another goal off a corner. Lauren Hopkins played the ball to Jackie Smith who lifted it in the air and Stewart knocked it out of the air and put UMW up 3-1. The Eagles held on over the last two minutes to win 3-1.

UMW outshot Frostburg State 29-10 and had 17 penalty corners. Cavolt made seven saves in goal on the day.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday as they will host York on homecoming at 12 p.m.
