UMW Field Hockey Downs Rhodes, 3-1, on Monday

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team downed Rhodes College, 3-1, on Monday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 8-4 on the season.

Over the first 12 minutes of the half, UMW dominated possession and almost put one in the back of the net. The Eagles had three shots, one on goal, and two penalty corners in that span. Freshman Emma Claire Stewart put UMW up 1-0 as she scored her first career goal on a hard hit past the goalie. 

Jessica Cavolt made key saves off of a penalty corner to keep the Eagles ahead by one. Senior defender Shelby Press made a defensive save in the 25th minute and then Jackie Smith made one as well to keep UMW up 1-0.

In the second half, Lauren Hopkins scored in the 42nd minute as she tapped in a ball that was played in by Izzy Scholz. The Eagles defense came up big in the 47th minute as they pushed away two penalty corners from Rhodes. 

Freshman Sydney Keating added her first career goal to put UMW up 3-0 as she gathered a rebound off of a shot and finished past the goalie. Press came up with another defensive save in the 62nd minute to keep the Eagles up three. The Lynx scored on a penalty stroke with just 12 minutes left in the game to put the game at 3-1. From there, the UMW defense held strong and they finished out the game to take the win. 

The Eagles outshot the Lynx 19-15 and had nine penalty corners. Cavolt made nine saves in goal.

UMW will be back in action on Tuesday as they will host Frostburg State University in a CAC matchup at 4 p.m.
