UMW Edges Randolph-Macon, 2-1, on Wednesday Night

Sophomore Izzy Scholz scored one goal and assisted on another as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team improved to 7-3 on the season with a 2-1 victory at Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday night in Ashland, Va.

In a tightly contested battle, the Yellow Jackets reached the scoreboard first, as Katie Brookman scored on a penalty stroke at 26:48. The Eagles were able to draw a penalty corner in the waning seconds of the half, and connected on the corner, with Gillian Ross scoring on a Scholz assist at 35:00.

The Eagles jumped ahead for good at 52:00, as Scholz scored unassisted, and the defense tightened from there. The Eagles fended off a Randolph-Macon penalty corner at the close of regulation to maintain their one-goal margin.

Randolph-Macon led in shots, 17-13, while the Eagles led in penalty corners, 13-8. UMW goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt made nine saves in the contest, while Randolph-Macon's Gatlin Snyder made 10.

Mary Washington will return to action next Thursday when the Eagles host Frostburg State University in Capital Athletic Conference play at 4:00 p.m.
