MacCartney's Score Lifts UMW Field Hockey Past Catholic, 1-0, on Tuesday

Sophomore Morgan MacCartney scored the game's only goal with 21:04 elapsed in the first half to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 1-0 victory at Catholic University on Tuesday night in Washington, D..C. The Eagles improve to 6-2 on the season.

In an evenly played game, chances were evenly matched throughout, and neither team could solve the other's goalie until MacCartney used a redirect off a penalty corner to give the Eagles the lead they would not let go.

Catholic led in shots, 11-10, while the Eagles held a 10-6 advantage in corners. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt made four saves for UMW, while Kim McGroary had six saves for CUA.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they open Capital Athletic Conference play by hosting 10th ranked Christopher Newport University at 4:30 p.m.
