UMW Field Hockey Falls to Johns Hopkins, 3-1, in Home Opener

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Johns Hopkins University on Sunday in a swelterng home opener. The Eagles even their record at 1-1 on the season.

The Blue Jays started swiftly, scoring 3:38 into play on a goal from Izzy Thompson. The Eagles answered at 11:40, as sophomore Morgan MacCartney tied the score with an unassisted score. Johns Hopkins regained the lead at 18:08 on a Sarah Myers score, and held a 2-1 advantage to halftime.

In the second, both teams battled despite high temperatures and humidity, and the frame stood scoreless until Hopkins found the cage at 63:32 on a goal from Meghan Ophel following an initial shot on a penalty corner.

The Blue Jays led in shots, 14-12, as well as in penalty corners, 11-10. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt made six saves for Mary Washington while Meredith LeBel added a defensive save.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Bridgewater College at 6:00 p.m.
