UMW Field Hockey Opens With 4-3 Win at Washington College

Junior forward Lauren Hopkins scored a pair of goals and assisted on the game winner to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4-3 victory at Washington College (MD) on Saturday night in Chestertown, Md.

The Eagles built a 2-0 halftime lead, as Hopkins opened the scoring at 11:26, and sophomore Tori Hughes scored on a Gillian Ross assist at 21:12.

In the second, the Shorewomen knotted the score at 2-2 before Hopkins scored at 49:35 on an assist from Lexie Dixson. Washington again knotted the score at 3-3, but senior Alaina Shivers found the game winner at 60:32 on a pass from Hopkins.

The Eagles survived a late charge in the waning minutes, after a yellow card and several corners that goalie Jessica Cavolt stopped on each occasion.

Washington College led in shots, 20-11, and in penalty corners, 9-7. Cavolt made eight saves in the game, none bigger than the three in the final minutes.

UMW will return to action on Sunday when they host Johns Hopkins University at 2 p.m.
