UMW Field Hockey Tops Frostburg, 12-1, on Thursday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team erupted for a season-high 12 goals in a 12-1 victory over Frostburg State University on Thursday in Capital Athletic Conference play at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 9-6 on the season, and 2-2 in league contests.

Freshman Izzy Scholz opened the scoring for the Eagles at 6:51, on an assist from Lexie Dixson. At 8:39, senior Erin Kaila connected on a Noor Varjabedian assist, and the lead grew to 3-0 at 12:48, as Scholz scored again. Senior Allegra Massey-Elim connected for a goal at 17:41, and junior Shelby Press followed at 26:41 on a Massey-Elim assist. Freshman Bella Urcia upped the advantage to 6-0 at 27:42 on a Kaila pass, and senior Morgan LaRowe capped the first half scoring at 31:40 on an Urcia assist.

In the second half, freshman Madison Healy scored on a Massey-Elim pass at 45:34, and Press followed with her second of the day ay 46:30. LaRowe tallied her second at 60:45, and was followed at 64:12 by Alaina Shivers and freshman Sammie Ferris in the final five minutes. Frostburg scored in the closing minutes.

Mary Washington led in shots, 32-5, and in penalty corners, 16-3. UMW goalkeepers Jessica Cavolt and Ivy Hollander each had one save in splitting time in cage. Frostburg's Nicole Leighty and Sierra Smizer each had five stops.

The Eagles will host Salisbury University on Saturday at 12:30 pm as part of Homecoming in a key CAC showdown.
