UMW Field Hockey Falls at York, 4-3, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision at York College on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles slip to 11-8 overall and 1-2 in CAC play.

The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead, behind goals at 8:14 from Lindsay Nye and at 29:05 from Dana Meehling. The Spartans opened the second half with another goal in the first minute to build a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles' comeback effort started with a goal one minute later from sophomore Lauren Hopkins, who caged her 10th goal of the year. After another Nye score for York upped the advantage to 4-1 at the 44:35 mark, UMW senior Erin Kaila scored at 46:54 to pull to within 4-2. At 50:17, sophomore Lexie Dixson scored to pull to within 4-3, but neither team would score in the final 19 minutes of play.

York led in shots, 22-12, as well as in penalty corners, 13-4. UMW goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt had 10 saves for the Eagles, while York's Eve Haeuptle had four.

The Eagles will return to action on Thursday when they host Frostburg State University at 4:00 p.m.
