#19 UMW Field Hockey Falls Late to #10 CNU, 3-2, on Wednesday Afternoon

In an entertaining back and forth contest, the 19th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to 10th ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 7-5 on the season, and 1-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

CNU opened the scoring early on, as Carol Thompson scored unassisted at 6:25. The Eagles knotted the score at 17:36, when freshman Izzy Scholz scored on an Allegra Massey-Elim assist. The game stood tied at 1-1 at intermission.

In the second half, UMW jumped ahead at 40:48, as freshman Madison Healy scored after Noor Varjabedian's shot hit off the far post and rebounded straight to Healy's stick. The Captains tied the score at 44:11 on a penalty stroke from Alexa Weaver, and had another penalty stroke at 64:17. This time, the shot sailed wide to keep the score tied, but CNU found the winner at 67:13 on a Courtney Fiest goal.

The Captains led in shots, 18-9, and in corners, 8-6. UMW goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt had 11 saves for the Eagles, while Stephanie McKinney had three saves for CNU.

The Eagles will return to action next Tuesday when they visit St. Mary's College in another CAC contest starting at 4:00 p.m.
