Hopkins' Two Scores Lead UMW Field Hockey Past #9 Franklin & Marshall, 3-2, on Saturday

Sophomore midfielder Lauren Hopkins scored two goals and sophomore Lexie Dixson added another to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 3-2 victory at ninth-ranked Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, Pa. The Eagles, who gain their first win over a top-10 ranked opponent since 2015, improve to 3-1 on the season.

Hopkins opened the scoring in the early going, caging her first score just 3:29 into the game. After a saved shot, Hopkins took the loose ball and slid it into the cage, with what proved to be the lone score of the first half.

In the second half, F&M tied the score less than three minutes into play, but at 51:01, Hopkins scored on a pass from senior Allegra Massey-Elim to put UMW back on top.At 55:56, the Diplomats again knotted the score, setting the stage for Dixson. With 7:07 left on the clock, Dixson deflected a shot toward goal from freshman Morgan MacCartney, providing the capper for a 3-2 win, which snapped a three-game losing streak for the Eagles to F&M.

The Diplomats led in shots, 14-11, and in penalty corners, 12-6. UMW goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt made six saves for the Eagles, while Ilianna Santangelo had four saves for F&M.

The Eagles' last win over a top-10 team was on October 24, 2015, when UMW downed fourth ranked Salisbury. Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Eastern Mennonite University at 6 p.m.
