18th Ranked UMW Field Hockey Falls at #7 Tufts, 2-0, on Saturday

Seventh-ranked Turfts University scored a pair of first half goals and held on for a 2-0 victory over 18th ranked Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in Boston, Mass., in a battle of top-20 squads. The Eagles slip to 5-3 on the season.

The Jumbos opened the scoring midway through the first half, as Celia Lewis scored on a Nicole Arata assist. Tufts added an insurance tally with 26 seconds left in the half, as Gigi Tutoni scored on a Mary Travers assist, taking momentum into halftime.

Tufts connected for 13 second-half shots, but just four were put on cage, and UMW goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt stopped each of them. The Eagles had four chances in each half, but were stopped each time.

In all, Tufts led in shots, 30-8, and in penalty corners, 15-4. Cavolt had nine saves for the Eagles, while Emily Polinsky had three saves for Tufts.

The Eagles (5-3) will return to action on Sunday when they face Framingham Statae University at Tufts at noon.
