#18 UMW Field Hockey Tops Washington & Lee, 4-1, on Wednesday Night

Freshman Lauren Hopkins scored a pair of goals, and the 18th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team overcame an early deficit to defeat Washington & Lee University, 4-1, on Wednesday night at the UMW Campus Rec Field. The Eagles improve to 5-2 on the season, while Generals fall to 4-3.

Washington & Lee opened the scoring less than 10 minutes into play on a score from Maggie Wexler. The Eagles had several immediate chances thereafter, and capitalized on a goal from freshman Victoria Novak at 31:53. Hopkins quickly followed at 33:39, giving momentum and the lead to the Eagles heading to intermission.

In the second, Hopkins scored again five minutes into play for her second goal of the night and eighth of the season. Junior Morgan LaRowe added another tally at 58:40 to give UMW a three-goal cushion.

UMW led in shots, 17-4, and in penalty corners, 7-6. Sophomore Jessica Cavolt had three saves in goal for Mary Washington, while Ariyel Yavalar had seven saves for W&L.

The Eagles will return to action this weekend, when they will face Tufts University on Saturday at 1:00, and then face Framingham State on Sunday at Tufts at noon.
