#16 UMW Field Hockey Tops Lynchburg, 4-1, in Saturday Contest

The 16th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team used a pair of goals from freshman Lauren Hopkins and two more from senior Christine Loehr in defeating Lynchburg College, 4-1, on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 4-2 on the season.

The Hornets jumped ahead early, scoring on their first shot, at 6:43 elapsed by Lacey Elliott in traffic. UMW tied the score at 12:15, as Loehr scored on an Allegra Massey-Elim assist off a penalty corner. The score stayed tied through halftime.

UMW went ahead to stay six minutes into the second half, as Hopkins scored on a Massey-Elim assist. Sixteen minutes later, Hopkins added an insurance score, collecting a saved shot off the keepr's stick. Loehr capped the scoring at 65:44 off an individual move on another corner.

The Eagles led in shots, 25-11, and in penalty corners, 5-2. Beka Hess had 13 saves and Alyssa Mills one defensive save for Lynchburg, while Jessica Cavolt had six stops and Gillian Ross one defensive save for UMW.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday night when they host Washington & Lee University at 7:00 p.m. on the campus rec field.
