#12 UMW Field Hockey Falls to #18 Rochester, 2-1, on Saturday

The 12th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team jumped out to a 1-0 halftime advantage, but 18th ranked University of Rochester came back with a pair of scores off of penalty corners in the second half to top the Eagles, 2-1, on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 1-1 on the season.

The Eagles held an early advantage offensively, leading in shots in the opening frame, 6-3, and taking the lead at 25:41 on a score from senior Christine Loehr. UMW held the lead into intermission.

In the second half, Rochester gained strength offensively, outshooting the Eagles, 7-2. The Yellowjackets tied the score at 1-1 3:16 into the second half, as Maya Haigis scored on a redirect off a corner shot from Olivia Denney.

Rochester scored the eventual game winner with 9:10 remaining, as Emma Schlecter scored on a Samantha Dow shot off a corner, with another redirect.

Mary Washington led in shots, 10-8, and Rochester led in corners, 7-5. Jessica Cavolt had three saves in cage for UMW, while Rochester's Gabrielle Cantley had six saves and Kiran Sundaram had none in sharing time for the win.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Eastern Mennonite University at 4 p.m.
